چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is superior to Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in detection of atrial septal defects and aneurysm, aortic atheroma, left atrial thrombus and mitral valve abnormalities. TEE is indicated in young adults with cryptogenic ischemic stroke who are suspected of having cardioembolic mechanism despite non-diagnostic

[Role of complex aortic atheroma plaques in the recurrence of unexplained cerebral infarction].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES In a subgroup of patients with cerebral infarction, noninvasive diagnostic explorations fail to disclose the etiology. We studied the clinical course and the usefulness of transesophageal echocardiography to diagnose complex aortic atheroma plaques in patients with cerebral infarction of uncertain cause with recurrence of ischemia. PATIENTS AND METHOD In a study po...

Frequency of atrial septal aneurysms in patients with cerebral ischemic events.

BACKGROUND Atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is a putative risk factor for cardioembolism. However, the frequency of ASA in the general population has not been adequately determined. Therefore, the frequency in patients with cerebral ischemic events, compared with the frequency in the general population, is poorly defined. We sought to determine the frequency of ASA in the general population and to ...

Biatrial myxoma and cerebral ischemia successfully treated with intravenous thrombolytic therapy and surgical resection.

We report what we believe is the 1st case in the medical literature in which an intravenous thrombolytic agent was used successfully--without massive intracranial bleeding--to treat acute stroke induced by atrial myxoma. Our patient, who had biatrial myxomas with a dual blood supply from the right coronary artery, presented with cerebral ischemia. Transesophageal echocardiography was essential ...

Early detection and efficient therapy of cardiac angiosarcoma due to routine transesophageal echocardiography after cerebrovascular stroke

Primary malignant cardiac tumors (cardiac angiosarcomas) are exceedingly rare. Since there are initially nonspecific or missing symptoms, these tumors are usually diagnosed only in an advanced, often incurable stage, after the large tumor mass elicits hemodynamic obstructive symptoms. A 59-year-old female presented with symptoms of cerebral ischemia. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed chang...

Transesophageal echocardiography in patients with cryptogenic cerebral ischemia

BACKGROUND In about one third of all patients with cerebral ischemia, no definite cause can be identified (cryptogenic stroke). In many patients with initially suspected cryptogenic stroke, however, a cardiogenic etiology can eventually be determined. Hence, the aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of abnormal echocardiographic findings in a large number of these patients. METHOD ...
